Scramble
Also called Texas scramble, ambrose
In a scramble everyone on the side hits, the side picks the best shot, and everyone plays again from there. It is fast, forgiving and the right call when abilities in the group vary wildly.

Match playscoring
How it works
- 1All players tee off, and the side selects the best ball.
- 2Everyone plays their next shot from that spot, within a club length and no nearer the hole.
- 3Repeat until holed. The side records a single score for the hole.
Handicaps
A four-player scramble commonly uses 25/20/15/10 of each player's Course Handicap, lowest first, added together. Team formats vary here, so confirm the allowance before you start.
Playing it well
- Let the highest handicapper putt first — a free look at the line is worth real shots.
- Send your longest hitter last off the tee, once there is already a ball in play.
